Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 1-28-17, I listened to an Illinois fiddler John Ray "Doc" Corn recording, made on his birthday in 1976. The tune was also recorded by Lynn Chirps Smith, a fiddler whose work I respect and enjoy. There's not much other information yet on this tune other than it had another title that isn't so nice.

John Ray “Doc” Corn was my grandfather. A good fiddler and a very fine gentleman.

Oh my gosh, that’s awesome. Now I’ll want to go back to the TOTW and re-read it. Perhaps you can add more info. Thanks for listening!

He was born in Hamilton Co. Illinois in 1893. Died in 1984 in Franklin Co Illinois. I was the only grandchild that took up the old music. He told me that back in the old days everybody played music. There where some of his generation around that still played when I was growing up. Most played two or three different instruments.

Grandpa played primarily fiddle, but also guitar and banjo. He played an archaic two finger up-picking style on the banjo. He fingerpicked the guitar.

You can’t imagine how interesting those old folks were… but maybe you can, or you wouldn’t be here.

There’s a quote attributed to the Scottish author, Neil Munro, regarding the pipes (which I once played), but is applicable to the old music too. It’s how I feel all these years later when I play, now that they’re all long gone.
“And leaning a fond ear to the drone, he may have parlay with old folks of old affairs"

Detailed info, thanks so much, Sean! I’d definitely like to hear the recorded music you mentioned. The banjo has a nice drone, too, when played in the clawhammer style.
