I am interested to learn more about this tune. I just recently heard an "old time" version of "sail away ladies" and it immediately reminded my of "Sally Ann" but a bit different.... can you tell me what's different about the two? I'd like to understand... thanks.
Brian

Howdy Brian,
My understanding is of the two tunes is: "Sail Away Ladies" is indeed a sep. tune. I've usually heard this tune more in the Western part of the US. I'm thinking the name of the tune may have something to do with the Miss. river and riverboats (but honestly, I'm not sure). "Sally Ann" came from the Earl Scruggs/Paul Warren (his fiddler) minds and this is the ver. which most Scruggs players use to this day.
Honestly, I got my inspiration from the Alan Munde recording of "Sail Away Ladies" on his "Banjo Sandwich" album (from the 1970's). My thought was to combine the two as best as I could.
Chord-wise, the big diff. is the use of an Am chord for "Sail Away Ladies".
I hope the above might be of some help to you ...
