A second tune I've learned from the playing of Missouri fiddler Lonnie Robertson (1908 - 1981). Old Joe was also played on the Opry and possibly has some links (in its "odd metric patterns") to a minstrel tune of the same name.

Very nice, Janet, well played. I have to admit, though, I couldn't hear any particularly odd meter, it seemed pretty square and normal to me, as old fiddle tunes go. What am I missing?

I like the tune a lot. Thanks, Jimi and Don. If it has an "odd metric pattern," (and I was quoting from the liner notes of Gordon McCann and Mark Wilson) it seems to be in the placement of the melody's accent, which moves around a lot in the A part. It falls variably on any of the four beats. Mark Wilson compares this to a minstrel tune with a similar metric pattern -- F.H. Brower's "Old Joe" of 1844, but says the melody is different. Sorry I took so long to try and figure this out, Don!
