Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time

For the old-time Tune of the Week, this version comes from Owen Snake Chapman of Pike County, Kentucky. He learned it from Kenny Baker's father, Thaddeus. Mine is slowed-down and I can imagine going up a river cautiously in the wilderness. I play it in open G tuning on a Mac Traynham Whyte Laydie. Check out this week's TOTW for more information and links.

I can see the pioneers poling their flat bottom up that river keeping a sharp lookout for snags, game, critters and injuns

Thanks for the visual imagery, Denton. You've probably seen a few thousand flat bottomed boats. I only pictured canoes and that's not exactly considered "boating."

:) Thanks, David. I agree about the fiddly bits--the fiddle continues to beckon to my banjo.

Thanks, Rick. Anything in the Snake Chapman repertoire is worth exploring.
