Genre: Other / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time

A clawhammered, chordal approach to this light-hearted song John claimed in his lyrics that he dreamt about. I've heard this on BHO several times and am a great fan of John Hartford, though I have much, much more to learn about his music. I think the genre is considered Newgrass, but you can correct me.

Thanks for sharing your comments. The melody's been in my mind all day. Here are the lyrics. Whoever posted them on-line spelled aeroplane correctly. Apparently John didn't.

JOHN HARTFORD

Steam Powered Aereo Plane Lyrics
Well, I dreamt I went away
On a steam powered aereoplane
I went and I stayed and
I damm near didn't come back again

And I didn't go very fast
On a steam powered areoplane
Oh, the wheel went around and up and down
And inside and then back again

Sittin' on a 747 just a watchin' them clouds roll by
Can't tell if it's sunshine or if it's rain, rain, rain
Rather be a sittin' in a deck chair high up over Kansas City
On a genuine ol' fashioned authentic steam powered aereoplane

Well I'd like to be a pilot
of that steam powered aereoplane
Well, I'd pull that pilot wheel around
and then back again

And I'd wear a blue hat, yeah
That says 'steam powered aereoplane'
In letters that go 'round the brim and then back again

Sittin' on a 747 just a watchin' them clouds roll by
Can't tell if it's sunshine or if it's rain, rain, rain
Rather be a sittin' in a deck chair high up over Kansas City
On a genuine ol' fashioned authentic steam powered aereoplane

A very tasteful rendition of the melody of a silly song! Great!

I'm grateful for your comments, Don, Rick, Denton, and Lew.

Denton, I'm still at work on your song Wrong Note. It's got great potential and today I was with some kids who were picking dandelions. I told them about just picking the leaves and letting the plant grow. The 6-year old didn't seem to get it yet.

Think your lessons with Mr. Hurt are payin' dividends JB... very nice indeed.

John's album is not consistent. The word Aereoplane / Aeroplane is spelled differently as the song title and the record title. I'll forgive him that. One of my most treasured albums.

Eric Schlange was at the IBMA and came back with this trivia fact: John Hartford was buried in a Batman cape--he really wanted to fly, but I understand he was a good steamboat pilot. So he must have put the two ideas together--a steam-powered airplane.
