Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time
This version comes from Paul David Smith of Kentucky who learned it from his father. It's in the unusual tuning of fCGCD, though Paul played it in fDFAD. Mine's clawhammered, his was picked. I've wondered how many different Lost Indians there are. I know three distinct tunes called Lost Indian and have heard more than that.

What a different version! I somewhat learned the standard version of this from bluegrassers whom I jam with. I say "somewhat learned" because I've never that tune into my head very well and mastered it.

I agree that it's surely different and thanks for listening, Lew. I can't say I've yet mastered it either! In the liner notes for this CD, Devil Eat the Groundhog, three titles are mentioned that Paul Smith's Lost Indian resemble--Rambling Hobo, Davenport, and Last Chance. There's another mention of the Shelor family's Flying Indian. Interestingly, it was Gaither Carlton's Rambling Hobo mentioned in the notes and in this month's Banjo Newsletter there's a tab for it as played by Doc Watson.
Actually, I learned Doc Watson's Lost Indian, which sounds like many others, including Marion Sumner's. Perhaps that's the one you know. There's even another I learned from Adam recently as played by Kyle Creed and meant to help me work on the Galax lick.

Yep... a bit o' Last Chance... but nothin' like Hobart's... so must be a Lost Indian variant... quite enjoyable nonetheless Janet.

Janet, I truly appreciate these posts. your playing is very clear and pretty, but the 'liner notes' are a real treasure for someone like me who cares and wants to learn the history of this music all around us.

Thanks for listening, Ken. I haven't seen as many videos from you these days so it's good to know you're still around. I have a Hobart Smith CD from a friend I'm checking out. His Last Chance is just like R.D. Lunceford's, if I'm correct, and I like it a lot.
Thanks, Rick. Liner notes are concise and often interesting, too, with little anecdotes that paint a picture of the player's background. Have you read Stephen Wade's new book yet? It's long, but interesting and comes with a CD from the Library of Congress. Great stuff!
