I'd been working on the "Galax lick" I learned from Adam Hurt, then turned to a Brad Leftwich arrangement of Tommy Jarrel's Backstep Cindy, and finally figured out how to insert that little phrase into a TOTW, Granny Went to Meeting. Other people have different names for the Galax lick, but it's still a convenient way to identify a familiar pattern of fingering and timing.

Yeah! Kicked it off with one! I love the Galax lick, it is a great timing trick for crooked tunes and just sounds pretty.

Thanks for noticing, Tom. Adam is really skillful at orally passing on his arrangements and notices in a second what is out of kilter! I've only met Brad once, but got to participate in a jam he was leading. He's skillful and gentle and sure has a lot of old-time music from deep down exposure to it. Now that I understand it, I'm hearing the Galax lick more in other tunes.

I use it like hot sauce, sparingly on anything. I was introduced to it with 'Liza Jane' I use it in 'Sugar Hill', 'Sandy Boys', 'Old Joe Clark'. It is a fun ornament and can help straighten out or resolve spots when I feel 'trapped'.
