For the Tune of the Week 5/13/13, based on Tommy Jarrell's fiddling. It's different from the tune as I learned it growing up. Played on my Bart Reiter Whyte Laydie in the tuning eDGBD.

Janet, very nice! It seems that many of Tommy Jarrell's tunes are significantly different to my ear than the 'standard' version I have heard. Thank you for demonstrating it on the banjo.
I wonder if there is a sort of musical Grimm's Law? It seems there was some sort of note or scales precession (?) that happened to many tunes in mid 20th Century. Sort of like Bill Stepp's 'Bonepart's Retreat'. Would love to know what is happening there.

Thanks for the nice comments. I agree with you, Rick, about the scales. often modal or "mountain" sounding. Their sound automatically takes us to a pioneering era in a rural setting. It creates a nostalgia we can't quite explain. I think of where my father was raised in a tiny coal mining town and what he must have heard and played.
