Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time

Recorded at an old time jam at the Tucson Folk Festival, 2013. Mandolin: Dave Firestine. Bass: Jerry Weinert. Accordion: Russ Healy. If you can hear a banjo, that's me. It seems that every old time musician in Tucson knows this tune. It's a Tohono O'odham fiddle tune from the indigenous Indians in southern Arizona -- but I have never found an original recording by them.

I thought I heard it on Lawrence Welk a half century ago. :)

Exactly! Every time we play this I think of Lawrence Welk. But it's rapidly becoming a staple at Tucson OT jams.

Wouldn't surprise Alan Lomax. Just finished a biography and he knew way back when how the cultures shared and mixed. He was ahead of his time and probably didn't know the meaning of resting, though he got in on some amazing jams. I think it's fine that old time jams include polkas. It's rock and pop that chaps my hide, so to speak.

Speaking of cultural mix, you might enjoy Big Jim Griffith's book, A Border Runs Through It. It's all about cultural mix in Southern Arizona / Mexico.

Big Jim is also a great banjo player with an amazing voice. We are occasionally treated to his presence at OT jams in Tucson. And he's even played a few Farmers Market gigs with us. Here's a short excerpt of his playing and singing:

Very nice, a great sound. Janet, were you around a half century ago?
