After recording with a fretted banjo I tried my small scale fretless gourd, too. I find getting all the notes challenging and think of the fiddle's challenge with a very short scale compared to a banjo.

Hey there Janet....Didn't ya feel it sounded so much better on a Gourd banjar?
(I love that sound.)

I knew it wouldn't be too difficult to play those notes on the gourd (but no the up-the-neck intro) and I liked the sustained sound I got in that particular recording. I liked playing it on the fretted banjo, too. Thanks, Gordy, but I think your name lends a bias. :)

Hah! Got me...it's true!
(Smartsville! I'm one of the few that know where that is!)
PS~ In my reading of the 1800's descriptions; The players of the time used to revel in the looseness of the fretless neck. It creates a fluid sound. The notes have more life to em. Admittedly, it's not for everyone.

I know that just the slightest movement of my finger changes the pitch and this is a small scale neck, so the change is even more evident. But the slides are amazing!
