A comparison recording with the fretless gourd banjo. The slides from the gourd transfer easily to the fretted neck of the openback.

Deford Bailey was the first harmonica player in the grand old opry at the Wyman theatre.

I learned about him from the playing of Mike Compton. I enjoyed the biography about DeFord. He was a humble man and thankfully we have recordings of him. Evening Prayer Blues was the worst of those recordings and I’m surprise that Bill Monroe and Mike could get so much music from it. But Bill heard him first hand, I believe, and so knew what the tune must have sounded like.
