Nice clawhammer! First heard this tune on a CD our friend bought in Tennesee from the Cracker Barrel Co. with lots of bluegrass greats--Stuart Duncan, Mike Compton, Scott Vestal and others. Then simultaneously I heard it on a CD from Boogertown Gap out of the Smokies. I didn't think buffalo were hunted there. Where did you learn it? What tuning do you use?

Thanks!
I learned this first from a recording on Elizabeth Fitch's Myspace and then from Jubal's Kin. I've had trouble finding other recordings of it. It looks as though I have some new leads! I initially learned it regular G-tuning, but it really sounds nice in drop-sawmill capoed up to A on the fourth fret, which is how I play it here.

The Boogertown Gap Old-Time String Band recorded it on their Fried Okra CD in what they call "calico" tuning (aEAC#E). Is that your drop-sawmill tuning? I like the Cracker Barrel Co. version the best on the CD called Old Time Barn Dance. The other great players besides Stuart, Mike, and Scott include Aubrey Haynie, Mark Howard, David Grier, Mike Bub and Dennis Crouch.

It's fDGCD capoed to aF#BEF#. Sorry, I guess that I'm not actually sure what the name of the tuning is, if it even has a name.
