Thanks to Ron Hughes for his classified ad on Banjo Hangout for his excellent resource, O'Carolan for 5 String Banjo, and for siting his resource--'Carolan, The Life and Music of an Irish Harper, by Donal O'Sullivan (1958).

What I can't understand is how you make a piano sound so much like a banjo: )

Hi Janet, love your version of 'Frank Palmer' very pretty and laid back. Great playing, well done. I think the key of C gives it a 'darker' sound. I changed the key to G to suit my fiddle player as he could navigate the tune better in this key. Glad you're finding my book useful. You might be interested to know that when I was researching the tunes I transcribed most of music in O'Sullivan's book and picked the 20 tunes for inclusion in mine that I thought had the strongest melodies. I 'hear' these pieces of O'Carolan's music as bright and joyous, truely celebrations of the people they were composed for. I can picture O'Carolan sat in a great hall surrounded by his patron and attentive friends and family members. I can't imagine that what with being Irish and the large amounts of alcohol that would be sloshing about the tunes would be played in a 'sober' (pardon the pun) fashion, even in the 18th Century!. So I arranged the tunes and recorded the CD with these images in mind. Of course we can only guess as to how the master composer actually played them on his Harp!.
I'm looking forward to more posts from you of O'Carolan's wonderful music. All the best. Ron H.

That's great feedback and further information. Thanks, Ron. I'm working on Morgan Magan quite intently now and communicated with Bilbo1 about O'Carolan's Draught (that must be a song with a stout drink in mind). I recommend your book highly!
