Sounds to me like it might be a banjo-guitar, played to highlight the bass notes... might be a banjo bass. Here's what a friend told me about the group:
Nicholson's Players...Led by a guy named Will Nicholson. Also in the band, one Glen Spurgeon. Nicholson played banjo, Spurgeon guitar....That track you have recorded in 1930 in Richmond, Indiana. That same record was released on different labels - Champion, Supertone, Suprior - some under the name Armstrong's Players or the Goose Creek Gully Jumpers.
