been playing just over a month, thought i'd record myself to see how i sound. which is pretty terrible. made loads of mistakes and whatever......

That sounds really good for a month. You must already play some other instrument or be blessed with a lot of talent..

That's a LOT better than I was after one month! I was still struggling with rolls and simple techniques. Get the tune embeded in your head, such that you don't have to think about "how" to play, and then you will be surprised to see that you can listen to what you're playing a lot better. One test I have is "can you sing along while playing"? I can only sing when the song is pretty stable in my head.
