I first heard this tune from a BHO posting by Chris Ptasnik, and then bought the CD by the Airtight String Band of Charleston, IL, which has it. I was taken by the tune, did not learn it then, just stuck it in the "list of good tunes I should learn". Then I recently got the re-issue CDs of the Delta Creek Boys, and worked it out on mandolin while I was waiting around in the car before playing for one of those cemetery walk events. Being on mandolin, I didn't know what key I was in, so I was surprised when I later asked my fiddler friend and he said it was in G. Anyway, this tune is named for a fiddler from Benton, Illinois. I was here at work waiting until a computer meeting began, so I decided to try it on my old aluminum banjo. I'm probably in G, more or less.

Hey, that sounds good! It sounds a bit different than the version that I have on my Dear Old Illinois CD set, so you have piqued my interest in taking it off my to-do list to start work on it. Keep that up and you will eclipse Sean Barth and Lyle Konigsberg in the inspiration department.

Most likely it sounds a bit different because of the 2nd-string slide I'm using in the beginning of the A part. The full melody differs from that, but I bet it is compatible. If I were on a better instrument I'd probably try something else right there, at least part of the time. The aluminum banjo does not allow much finesse.

Nice tune, very nicely played. It's great to hear that healthy downstroke again, it doesn't appear to be too fashionable these days. Thank that old aluminum banjo for me!
