Tom... that's a really great image, but, it's flipped horizontally. He's a lefty playing a right handed boucher style. (For verification, note the way his tunic overlaps).

Yes, a high percentage of 19th century banjo photos are done just like this. It is because the old cameras reversed the image and made a right handed subject look left handed. But clever photographers advised their customers to flip the banjo over all would be well . . . well, sort of!
It is just a funny old thing from the mid 1800s.
He is just posing. BUT he is very likely a REAL banjo player and when he played, his fifth string would be up (reversed from the photo) in normal position). This was just done for the photograph.
