Goshen buit by Dan Knowles

Posted 11/22/2009 3:08:11 PM

This photo was taken by John Balch under natural light. Goshen is a flush fret banjo built in the style of 1870 and has a Spanish cedar neck that has cedar grain and curly figures more common in maple. The rim is cocobolo and bound in ebony. This banjo does not have a tone ring and is cut at the top to accept the head which is goat skin. Tuners are engraved bone. Flush frets are old stock piano ivory. The tail piece is carved ivory as is the nut. The finish is french polish varnish and aged to provide a mild checking. Marquetry is french furniture material approximately 100 years old. Shoes are cast and all metal parts are antiqued and etched. This banjo was conceived by Dan Knowles by writing a faux article as if a banjo had turned up in an estate sale. The story line was if Dan's great grandfather built it for my great grandfather but it did not stay in the family. An ambrotype image circa 1850 of my fraternal great grandfather is set in the dowel stick. Dan's great grandfather was a wood worker and his mark tool is used to stamp the builder beneath the image. This was a fun project and characteristic of Dan's creative style and quality.
