I fly all over North America and Europe with my open back banjo with a calf skin head. The danger to the head at 35,000 feet (10,668 meters) is that there is no humidity and the head can get too tight. Fortunately I have a Gary Price flight case which is air tight, but meanwhile on the ground it is getting colder and dryer now that winter is approaching. So behold the inexpensive solution! I bought a Dampit for $7 and tied a couple of rubber bands around the ends. The Dampit also comes with a little paper humidity gauge that works just fine. I leave the Dampit on all the time when I travel now and the head maintains the proper moisture content. I like to keep it nice and tight and I do not like to loosen and tighten and loosen and tighten. So now I just leave it tight and have not had any problems at all. It has been on many flight and trips now. I have been in Texas one day and Scotland the next, and I have no problems. http://www.dampits.com/
