Hey Jane, yes you have to be licensed and also pass a hunter education course.The meat does get eaten, My Wife loves it.

No hammeron I've never heard of them.This is his first year to hunt with a crossbow. In Pa. you have to have a special permit to use one. you have to have a disability. thanks for your interest.

That's awesome! I know you are very proud of him...I 'm glad to see the father -son "hunting tradition" is still alive! Made my day...by the way, I may be a female, but I do know  alittle bit about crossbows and getting a deer with one ain't easy...heck getting a deer with anything ain't easy!  I can smell the tenderloin on the grill as we speak!

Thanks vjguthrie, I've archery hunted for almost 20 year's and have taken alot of deer, but this hunt was by far my most enjoyable.words can't discribe it. take care.
