The little icon in the top left does not appear to reflect the picking. Why is it there and what does it indicate?

That icon gives you the fingering for that chord. The numbers at the bottom indicate which finger to use on each string. The 3fr on the right just indicates which fret to finger from. I know the fourth string isn't used, but that is the full formation of the chord, which I have been told to always do. I hope that answers the question.
Blimey mate, how many tunes are you learning?

I keep a few going at any one time to keep my interest and motivation. I have Amazing Grace, John Hardy, Old Joe Clark and Sixpenny Money in practice.
