Mike, the color is from red food coloring mixed with paint thinner.It seems to soak into the wood and grab a hold nicely for me.
Then I spray clear over it with several coats, polish it out to the gloss that I want and I got a colored neck at little cost for finish.All I had to do was raid the wifes kitchen and I had my color.
When she found out I stole her food coloring I had to replace it,,,,,,,
