Jack Hicks, Bill Monroe, Joe Stuart 1972 or 73

Good shot, Frank. I first saw Joe playing guitar with Bill (this time) in July of '73, but Jack sure does look young, so maybe this was from the year before. In any case, that was a really good BGB lineup, with Joe's guitar propelling them and Kenny's fiddle playing smooth backup. Ah-- nostalgia.

To Help date this photo. Joe began playing guitar (this time) at the Philly Folk Festival (my last date with the band) in late Sept of 71 and left the band after the California Tour in Feb or March of 73. Dan Jones worked his last performance after a fair at Stoverstown, Pa. Jack Hicks appears to have the baldwin banjo which he got just before Thanksgiving (Myrtle Beach) 1971.

Jack Hicks' banjo playing made Monroe's songbook come alive & sound fresh in those days. I've got a tape of this group playing in California on the 1973 tour mentioned above & wish I had more.
