At a jam session a few years back Dick said "take a look at this, tell me what you think." When he told me how much money he had been offered for it I had a hard time holding it.

Bill,
I remember that banjo well. Dick Smith was playing at the Old School House in Luckett's VA some years ago and I was chatting with him and admiring the banjo. He noted that I was wearing a brass banjo belt buckle and he immediately handed me the banjo. I tried to play something on it when suddenly my fingers turned into little sausages. I don't think I could have even picked my nose!

Bill, do you know any of the history of this machine? Who built it? Who doctored up the paint like that? The peghead looks like Gibson maybe. Rich

I talked to Dick about the banjo. This is what he told me. It is a white holly Florentine. The lot or serial number with a prefix 9227. The neck and rim were probably made at different times. The serial number is on the back of the peg head He believes the rim was made in 1932. Interestingly he thinks the banjo didn't "leave the factory" until 1939. It was originally a flathead tenor with factory nickel plated tube and ring. He knows of 5 like it that still exist. They are 3 flatheads and 2 arch tops
