The above link says the ship was a union gunboat during the Civil War and that the photo was taken by the famous photographer Matthew Brady:

That is a great photo! I found it years ago in the Navy archives and saved it. Back in the old sailing days there were always fiddles aboard and it is good to see that things progressed a little by the Civil War.
