Teh 8 string uke is just that - an 8 string uke. A friend of mine bought a beautiful tenor 8 string uke in Hawaii a year or so ago. Of course it could also be a guitar shaped version of the "Quadro" or "Quatro" which is an instrument found in South America and Portugal - the only difference is tuning and the Quatro is probably the instrument that became the uke in the first place.

It's called a mandolinetto. A guitar-shaped mandolin. They were popular turn of the century.
