Schoneberg, Sheldon - Angel of Bleeker Street Artist: Schoneberg, Sheldon Title: Angel of Bleeker Street Date: unknown The artist, Sheldon Schoneberg, was an optimist. ?The perfection of well-being, the good and bountiful life, bourgeois joy and nostalgia , sophistication and aristocratic elegance are the unmistakable alchemy of the Schoneberg message?, wrote his biographer, Secunda. He created a series of posters which is based on the same perfection in his work which he found in people. His work has a humanistic core. ?I love people, I love speaking with them, being with them?. This openness, when combined with the line of predestination has inevitably led to explorations which have given the artist an understanding of the universality of experience. ?Life is a grand mystery,? he says, ?It?s wonderful to see where it leads and who you will meet.? The Angel of Bleeker Street is a drawing of a young girl, telling the story of her as she appears as a street musician. She looks na?ve and optimistic as she sits barefoot on the sidewalk, holding the instrument which she plays for her living. She embodies Schoneberg?s view of life as he presents the drawing of her to us.
