Hi Fiddler - To tell you the truth, when I put this banjo together, I thought that the fingerboard was a little "over the top". But it's definately growing one me, and it sounds pretty good. Steel strings, old calfskin head, no tone ring (skin rests on wood). The fingerboard came from Vietnam... check out the "purty neck inlays" topic for some comments about buying inlays on eBay.
