Betsy gave me an hour of time in this SNJ-5 for a birthday present a couple of years ago.

Hi Rick,
Isn't that a T6. I started the engine on one of those at Shepard AFB during tech school training.  I was a ground crew mechanic a KC-97 at Pease, AFB in NH. I went in in 1958 and got out in 1962. The KC-97 had R 4360's on it. They didn't have any tankers at Shepard when we trained there except for engines. All the flight controls and hydraulics and stuff we were taught on B-29's or B-17's I can't remember.
Thats sure a nice birthday present, beautiful aircraft.

The SNJ-5 is the Navy version of the AT-6, so it's effectively the same plane.  This particular one was the Navy variant.  They're a beautiful flying aircraft.  I never guessed they'd be so light on the controls.  I spend most of my Navy days on AF bases between 1968 and 1972.  Our Naval Security Group units were working some common projects with the Air Force Security Service.

As soon as I saw the picture of you in the doghouse,  I knew it was an AT6 or SNJ-5.     A guy at the airport I kept my plane at had a bunch of old war birds including a German Storch.   One day I helped him push the AT6 out of his hangar when his tug would not start.   I got a ride in the AT6 as a reward.   Nothing like those big 9 cyl Pratt Whitneys,....
