On page 7 of Pete's classic book, How To Play the 5-String Banjo, the first song he uses to begin to teach a simplified version of his "basic strum" is "The Union Way". Written in 1948, this song is now largely unknown and so is not the best starter song to get folks playing the banjo. I have tabbed a simplified strum version on "Skip to My Lou", without ringing fifth string with the thumb, as is done on "The Union Way". Later, on page 12, Pete later teaches the fifth string ringing version of his "basic strum" using "Skip to My Lou". Hope this makes Pete's book a bit more accessible to today's students.
