VEry cool, Bill! My son and I did the same. He's now 21 and this very morning set foot in Sal Paulo Brazil for a 6 month semester studying choro and other Latin music (as well as the music business). Am I happy for him!? YES!! Terrified, too, but happy.

PS - He's got a banjo strapped to his back. I wonder how many of the 80+% African population in Salvador (one of the villages he'll visit) will recognize the current iteration of the akonting?

Hey Roxsanne,
He is 11 now - 12 in December. He's started playing guitar right handed now. I had to have the Little Martin converted to righty. His main instrument is piano. Not sure where the banjo was. We were just goofing arund on the six strings.

I feel very lucky.
He's now picked up trumpet and flugelhorn and has gotten quite good already. He's playing in jazz and stage bands and has done a couple club gigs.
