I'm a block rim builder. I think block rims open up a whole world of acoustic possibilities for the banjo that are simply not practical for steam- bent wrapped rims. As with the bridges, each wood type has its own characteristic acoustic response. In this photo, in no particular order, are the woods that I typically use for block rims: 1) maple; 2) mahogany; 3) ironwood; 4) pau lope; 5) hickory; 6) lacewood; 7) cherry; 8) walnut.

How does the different wood compare in the rims?

Fine looking rims ...I sure would like to be able to build my own ...and perhaps I will someday...
