Saw this in an article in straightening necks. The rubber bands are just to keep the level from sliding around, while both hands are busy tightening the clamp. Thin slats are between the level and the fingerboard, at the first and last frets so there is no risk of pressure deforming any of the frets. The block under the neck has a V cut into it, padded with a scrap of leather. I'll let it sit 24 hours, see how she runs.
