haystack |
This is me in early1967, @ Lomg Binh, Vietnam. This was shortly after I'd been shot down the first time. Notice how my hair is standing. After wearing a flat-top as I was growing up, then having it all cut off in basic, and short cut and side-wall trimmed in flight school, I was letting it grow out. When I was rescued and flown back to Long Binh, when I took my flight helmet off, it was standing like this. Capt John Colvin remarked that it looked like I had a haystack on top of my head, thus I was nick-named "Haystack". The nick-name stuck. I was called Haystack the rest of my tour in Vietnam. Some of my DUSTOFF friends still call me that, and it's my call on banjohangout.org..
