Hi Glenn, I recently got ahold of the Shady Grove dvd that has several tunes played by Tommy J, with Blanton Owen on banjo and Mike Seeger on guitar. Amazing stuff! I've always loved Blanton's playing and tone and I'm so glad that I get to see him in action. I've been watching over and over, staring at his right hand and arm position. My banjo is nearly identical to his (a 12inch pot Mac Traynham based on a Kyle Creed design), but I couldn't figure out how he was getting that great tone, until I shifted my arm to match his: basically parallel to the neck like you've described here. Suddenly that wonderful tone I've been striving for came pouring out! Anyway, I thought to write you and let you know: you were right! Best, Isaac
