Noel is an All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil flute champion, and an award-winning composer of Irish tunes. Back in 2007 he wrote a hornpipe set dance, 'The Happy Whistler', which was choreographed as a new set dance here in Ireland. In 2008 Noel won an award for the tune, after submitting it to CRN in Dublin. A panel of music adjudicators picked his piece out of 27 submissions, which then got narrowed to 5. Eventually his piece was chosen as the best new traditional set dance tune. He won prize money and the tune later went to dance schools. 'The Happy Whistler' was written specifically for Irish traditional set dancers, for teachers and schools, a piece of tradition for posterity. Noel plans to give it to dance teachers on both sides of the Atlantic to add something new to the tradition. Here it is in standard, used by permission, compliments of Noel Sweeney.
