To take the picker's subconscious alterations in playing style OUT of the equation, the banjo is clamped to the table, a weighted pendulum causes a plectrum to strike the strings, and a physical graph shows the volume and sustain. Then ONE thing is changed, the same weight hits the same strings with the same force in the same spot, and another graph is generated. The graphs, not the listeners' preferences, are compared.
