I plugged the hole with a short length of dowel to a depth just below the surface. I patched the hole with a small nearly circular piece of mahogany veneer (thanks Dick Guggenheim) glued in with a tiny drop of wood glue. I also cut small irregular slices out of the veener on either side of the hole and glued those in. Just over an hour later I sanded the patch level to the surrounding surface. I then lightly drew imitation grain lines and dots on the patched-in veneer. The existing finish was Tru-Oil. After two new coats of Tru-Oil (on the entire sidewall) there were some very small gaps between the patches and the adjacent wood that I had not seen before applying the finish. I filled these with small bits of wood-fill crayon that I sliced off with a knife. I scraped all excess off the surface of the wood. The crayon was more brown than red, but being color-blind I could not tell. Maybe you can see it. I can't. This photo is after 7 or 8 coats of Tru-Oil, with sanding at #320 after each of the first 7. Photo was taken about 8 hours after the last coat. After Thanksgiving, I'll sand it to some high numbers and rub with compounds.
