Nice photos. I have played that banjo a couple of times so what do you think? David E.

A little early to tell. I really like the features such as tunneled 5th string, matched wood grain, "thumb stop", the scalloped tension hoop, the great joinery and woodwork, and perhaps the frailing platform. I need to work up the neck, and this may make it easier. I adjusted the head and it sounds great. I think I got it with 4 Minstrel Nylguts and one steel, and may change to Classic Nylguts after John comes by to see it. (That is to allow easier tuning to D or A without breakage. Apparently the banjo will take it, the strings might not.) So far, I'm pleased. It is a different animal, however, with wider spacing. Neck feels great and smooth and comfortable. I saw Craig Evans' North American Banjo Makers and was "blown away" by Doc, not just his banjos, but his life and philosophy.
Your Romero and the Burns in the works look wonderful.

Dave, I meant to add the banjo arrived in perfect condition, exactly as described by Fred (oldpiper).

I would put classics on it personally. The minstrel strings are a little heavy for my sense of that banjo and short scale. I have a set of minstrel strings set back to go on a banjo with a very long scale and extremely low tuning and think they would be appropriate for that particular banjo. Enjoy it and maybe next time I am in M'Boro you can bring your truck load of banjos over to John's house. It would be nice to meet you. David E.
