Koromanti 1686 score

Posted 7/5/2012 8:05:41 AM

Sir Hans Sloane had this music scored in Jamaica in 1686. The African slaves played and sang beautiful music. Sir Sloane wrote that the "strum strum"--his term for their gourd banjo--was in use at their "festivals". It's interesting that the banjo term "merrywang" is almost included in the words on the second page. It says "meri wa langa," but the author wrote that he could not get it interpreted at the time.
