Man, I just picked up on the fact that the straight edge doesn't go over the rim......I kept tightening and tightening and wow, I still got a long way to go before the quarter hits the ruler.......(my I fell sheepish...)
SO, I just read your explanation again, just happen to pick up on exactly what you're doing here. That will make a big difference, what you're actually measuring is the pressure the bridge is putting on the head (I think). That is to say, the gap the bridge has against the head.
Is that right?

That is correct,Keith.
It's a "Poor Man's" dial indicator measuring the deflection into the mylar with,of course,strings that are tuned to pitch.
A tight quarter is a touch above an actual A note.
