When and where is this from? It looks like the 1920's or 30's . I couldn't help noticing the swastika, which kind of detracts a bit from the allure of the thing.

I got it from the Deering Banjos Facebook page. I and most of the people who commented on the photo also wondered about the swastika.

The cartoon characters are Teens and Twenties, so it predates the Nazis. The swastika is an ancient Indian symbol (it's all over many early bound editions of Kipling's work, for instance) so it's probably just an ugly coincidence.

Very cool. At least some of the characters are from old newspaper comics. I wonder if they're done by the actual cartoonist(s) or just a skillful copier.

Hey, I just turned up here to steal this image (ahem) and I noticed the initials R.K. under the swastika. Since, as I posted above, the swastika was all over early editions of Kipling's work, I'll bet anything that stands for Rudyard Kipling (who wrote that nice little poem about the banjo: poetryfoundation.org/poem/176149).

SW I believe you may be right about the RK/swastika reference. Good eye for that. I read the poem and that is excellent as well. The images he paints of where the "Song of the Banjo" is heard is on the deep side. Not like the lighter mostly fun form we all know. However, times change and so has the banjo.
