Hello Strumelia,
I notice the formica overlay. I have found that the sound created when sliding on the first string is a bit weak on my fretless gourd banjo's that do not have any overlay. Does the formica overlay lift the sound of the first string. I imagine it may do so, otherwise why have it. What do you think please Strumelia?

I don't know, the formica makes sliding feel nice and smooth, but i don't notice if it improves the volume or tone. I think the larger the gourd, the more volume and resonance it will have, usually.
Make sure you have the correct gauge of strings for the size of your banjo and the notes you are tuning it to. Also make sure the string notches fit each string properly in both the nut and the bridge. A poor notch fit will give a poor tone. Hope this helps.
