this is the best idea ever , and i 'm robbing it for my next build !! not having many tools and no "machines"is great exercise for the brain. lovely job you re so tidy !

Thanks. But I'd recommend against a vertical grain rim (see below)!
As for the dowel, another option is to do a 3-piece neck out of 1X3 or 4 stock, you can make the dowel an integral part of the center piece of wood. I'm building a neck like that right now.

yeah i was talking about the neck idea . i ve done two vertical grain builds now ,one with rim cap one without . both stable using nylon and nylgut- would nt dare use steel strings on these.! the only reason i m doing vertical is that i have a broken djembe drum that i can take a few slices off. the mini banjo head diameter is 8 7/16.next build will be smaller again for the craic. look forward to seeing your next build
