I think Alan has the gift of not doing the same old thing that most of us do when we learn Scruggs style. He doesn't do the same old backup licks that everybody else does. He makes it interesting by adding in some frailing techniques that simply blow my socks off. Love his playing.

Right! I am still going over his version of Bill Monroe's tune, "Jerusalem Ridge", which he taught to me during office hour @ MBC 2011.
He's not only a great picker, but a great singer, too! His vocal on "Lonesome Scene Of Winter", off of Sammy Shelor's "Leading Roll " CD, track 4, is very lonesome sounding. I'd like to see if he'd sing along if I played it with him at camp this year!
