The entire rim is plated with like Aluminum er something right?

It's a wooden pot with so called "spun over metal". In this case the metal is a thin sheet of brass that has been stained to look like silver (silver toned brass)... I've tried to clean it with chemicals and it took the silver coating completely of the brass .Oops, luckily it was just a tiny test spot :)
