Here is an ad from a 1889 'Yale Banner for John Farris' family of 4-string "Banjolins," a family of 4-string banjos, made in sizes and pitches relating to the violin/ mandolin family. They were tuned in 5ths, and played with a flat-pick. They were offered as: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. In effect, Farris' family of Banjolins includes the earliest-known example of what would eventually become known as the "Tenor Banjo."
