G'day Patrick, thanks for sharing your hives wth us . I've been thinking off getting a few hives ,not sure which way to go new or old all set up . What are the jars for on front of the hives ? PS I've had no experience with bee's. just something I would like .

Bob. Those are entrance feeders. They contain sugar water for the bees to feed on while there's nothing to forage. They'll convert that to wax to form comb that the queen will use to lay her eggs. As the population grows, more boxes will be added. There will be another deep box added in the next two weeks. After that, shallower boxes will be added. Those shallower boxes will be where I get my honey. If you can get stuff already set up, you're way ahead of the game. If the bees don't have to make honeycomb, you'll get a lot more honey.

Patrick. do you have disease and pests where you live ? that could be a worry getting hives already set up. over here i think you would pay $150 per hive thats not bad if there ready to go do you think ?

There's always the risk of disease and pests. If you have an apiary supply store there, you can get the antibiotics and pest control medications you need. I'll PM you with the title and ISBN # of a good starter book. I need to go up and dig it out.

Too bad carpenter bees don't make honey -- we could have lots!

Oh yeah. It's a fascinating hobby and the fresh honey is like nothing you've ever had.
