Ingredients: Martin OM35, Gibson RB250 with Keith tuners, Audacity software, laptop speakers and Skype mike. Mix with two portions of Mozart to make up a fiddle tune (parts A & B)

Updated version of a tune I wrote in G minor, dedicated to John McEuen who gave us Dismal Swamp and recorded here by our band, Blacksmith (Neil Harvey on guitar and Stef Malherbe on bass). I love minor-key stuff like Nashville Blues, too. Why "Mary"? Ask Hugh (Nosferatu).

Found some old live recordings on a 1981 cassette which someone must have taken when I was playing a gig with Steve Newman and Stef Malherbe, on bass. Steve is a great guitar player and this one is typical of his inventiveness. He used to love putting together medleys of tunes - this one of Grieg, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Rodrigo. Nice clean guitar, but the banjo not quite so clean :)

Another one from the 1981 tape. Please excuse the quality and fluffed notes, but it was taken from a really old cassette and live is live, what can I say. I also found an old pic of this lineup (The Biscuit Raiders) with Steve and Stef - uploaded it to the photo album section.

(Rondo alla Turca, last movement of his Piano Sonata No. 11) - another rediscovery from 1981. I couldn't play this one now even if I tried secretly at home, never mind live. I hear a few more fluffs and bum notes. Too bad. I'd like to try this once more. Needs a 4th member - mandolin player or fiddler. Have to work out the fingering all over again, though. That's the problem with melodic stuff - can't just jam it, unless maybe you're Bela Fleck or Eric Clapton.

An attempt at a country song: Two tracks on my Martin OM35; 1 fingerstyle and one flat-pick/rhythm (I really love that guitar sound - no pickups for me - EVER!) and faded the banjo in after the first refrain/chorus. Did the best I can with vox tracks. Home-recorded using Audacity with an Alesis 2-channel USB mixer and a Shure SM27. Not many takes. "Keep it rough and unplaned like a live rendition might be", I thought. Add Comment
