I composed this piece in memory of my friend, journalist and clawhammer virtuoso Rick Abrams, who passed away in 1997. The first two parts are written in the modal style of a klezmer freilach or bulgar, with the third part concluding in the old-timey style that Rick was such a master of. Annette Brodovsky is on fiddle, Felipe Ferraz on guitar, me on banjo. This track is found on our "And I in the Uttermost West" CD.

These two Jewish dances were collected by the legendary folklorist Moshe Beregovski in Ukraine, probably before World War II. The cut appears on our "Klezmer at the Confluence: Jewish Music from Sacramento" CD. Wayne Lutzow on accordion, Marc Epstein on clarinet, Lou Ann Weiss on string bass, Andy Rubin on banjo.

Two venerable reels from our collaborative "Shalom Ireland" CD. Crooked Road just loved to be clawhammered, with Lewis Santer providing wonderful DADGAD guitar backup.

Hasidic Dance of the Rebbe of Trisk. This clawhammer banjo / fiddle duet appears on our "And I in the Uttermost West" album with Annette Brodovsky on fiddle. Warning: it's difficult on banjo, involving significant 5th-string thumbfretting, not to mention reverse double-thumbing. If you'd like a pdf copy of the banjo tab, lemme know and I'll email it to you.

Another fiddle / clawhammer banjo duet, this time with Dave Rosenfeld on fiddle. The tune is probably from Jewish Galitzia (Southern Poland / Ukraine). You'll find it on our new CD, "Klezmer at the Confluence: Jewish Music from Sacramento" (2010).

Ongas are 2/4 line dances popular in Bessarabia. The great klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras wrote this one for Andy Statman, who recorded it in 1992. We learned it from the Irish traditional group DeDannan on their 1987 "Ballroom" album. It appears on our "And I in the Uttermost West" CD, with Annette Brodovsky on fiddle (both tracks), Felipe Ferraz on guitar, Lou Ann Weiss on bass and me on clawhammer banjo.

This long track from our Flower of Berezin CD features Dave Kidron on fiddle and voice. Plenty of clawhammer banjo coming in after a verse or so. The lyrics to Papirosn are by Hyman Yablokoff. They refer to the hard life of an orphan on the streets of an Eastern European city in the early 20th century. The track is from our "Flower of Berezin" CD.

This clawhammer banjo / classical guitar duet (Felipe Ferraz on guitar), originally learned from the traditional klezmer band Budowitz, was proobably composed by Aron Moyshe Kholodenko (1828-1902). It appears on our "And I in the Uttermost West" CD.

A "khosid" is a chasidic dance in 2/4. This one, from our collaborative "Shalom Ireland" CD, has Dave Kidron on fiddle and yours truly on banjo.

This is another of my bald attempts to meld klezmer and old-timey music on the clawhammer banjo. The "D" part is an adaptation of a Shabbat afternoon melody I've known for years. Be sure to check out Dave Rosenfeld's fascinating back-up guitar work. The track made it to our new album, "Klezmer at the Confluence: Jewish Music from Sacramento" (2010).

We learned this popular bulgar from the French gypsy group, Bratsch. It is on our "Flower of Berezin" CD. Dave Kidron on fiddle, Dave Rosenfeld on guitar, Elaine Fingerett on accordion, Lou Ann Weiss on bass, Andy Rubin on clawhammer banjo. I've tabbed out the banjo part if you'd like a pdf copy.

Here's a shot at a couple of freilachs from the repertoires of Naftule Brandwein, Shloimke Beckerman and Pete Sokoloff. Marc Epstein (clarinet), Andy Rubin (5-string banjo), Dave Rosenfeld (baraban). The track appears on our recent CD, "Klezmer at the Confluence: Jewish Music from Sacramento" (2010).
